Plans For New ‘Remoaner’ Political Party ‘Backed By 2 Cabinet Ministers’
David Davis’s former Chief of Staff James Chapman (pictured above with George Osborne) told John Humphries on the Today programme this morning that plans for a new ‘centrist anti-Brexit’ new political party were gathering momentum. He claimed to have been approached by TWO current conservative cabinet members and by SEVEN former cabinet members offering support for the plan, as well as by several current members of the Labour shadow cabinet.
It is planned to call the new party The Democrats. Jacob Rees-Mogg, who was also on the programme, told Mr. Chapman that the new proposed title was ‘laughable’ as the first act of the new party would be to attempt to overturn a democratically arrived at decision. He said a more appropriate title for them should be ‘The Oligarchs party’.
In an explosive series of tweets James Chapman, Mr Davis’ most senior aide until last month, said Brexit should be reversed and tweeted a hashtag promoting a second referendum in 2019.
He wrote last night: “Past time for sensible MPs in all parties to admit Brexit is a catastrophe, come together in new party if need be, and reverse it #euref19.”
He followed the tweet up by suggesting Remainer MPs Chuka Ummuna, Vince Cable, Anna Soubry, Nicky Morgan, Rachel Reeves, Nicholas Soames, Pat McFadden and Stella Creasy should get involved.
Chapman, who also used to be the political editor of the Daily Mail, added: “Also, well past time for sensible journeys on papers that supported Brexit to admit it is going to destroy lives of many of their readers.”
Vince Cable, who recently became the leader of the Liberal Democrats, tweeted his support for Chapman, calling him a “very wise man”.
Other Remainers also tweeted their support.
Journalist Nick Cohen wrote: “Am tweeting not only because this is true but because @jameschappers was David Davis’s chief of staff.”
