Different Spellings Make ‘Muhammad’ Top Boys Name of 2016
Yesterday’s figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) present the latest lists of the top 100 names trending for Boys and Girls, based on births during 2016. However, the raw stats do not paint the full picture.
The official list presents Oliver as the most popular name, with Muhammad in seventh place (3,908). However, there are traditionally several different ways to spell the Muslim name, and if we add in the totals for Mohammed (2,228) and Mohammad (948), then the total overtakes that of Oliver and its derivative Olly.
It can reasonably be said, then, that versions of the prophet’s name were the most popular choice for boys names in England and Wales during 2016. Perhaps another small indicator of the changing demographics of the UK.
