UK Youth Parliament Tramples On Democracy
Jacob West, UK Youth Parliament Member for Dudley has had something of a rough time. He was ordered to take down tweets critical of the UKYP hierarchy and their pet project of votes for 16-year-olds and because he bravely would not comply. His defiance earned him a suspension from the Parliament itself which is a grievous insult above all to the those that elected him.
The UK Youth Parliament has 300 elected members aged 11 – 18. Members of Youth Parliament are elected in youth elections throughout the UK every 2 years. Any young person aged 11-18 can stand or vote in the election. In the past two years, one million young people have voted in UK Youth Parliament elections.
Once elected, MYP’s organise events and projects, run campaigns and influence decision makers on the issues which matter most to young people in their area. All MYP’s meet nationally twice a year; at the UK Youth Parliament Annual Sitting, and the UK Youth Parliament House of Commons Sitting. Once a year, the Commons hosts a debate chaired by the Speaker of the House, John Bercow with all the MYP’s sitting on the famous green benches.
No formal Party system exists so every MYP is technically an independent. However, as you might expect, the left dominates the UKYP and as we all know when the left dominates anything the first thing they do is crush political dissent. Somewhat ironically the report on the latest Annual Sitting includes this gem:
There are no political parties or adversarial opposition, but everyone has an independent vote and the emphasis is on persuasion, consensus and researched arguments.
A quick survey of the topics up for discussion tells us all we need to know about the political complexion of the UKYP:
During the weekend issues such as support for young carers, improving healthcare services, supporting EU national’s post-Brexit and protecting the LGBT+ community all gained momentum following debates on new policy for the manifesto.
Talking about Brexit is beyond the pale by the way because it is branded as ‘divisive’ – heaven forfend anything should threaten the hive mind of the left at its most insidious.
Jacob himself plans to fight on. He told Kipper Central:
We must never succumbe to such censorship. We must fight, in whichever way we can, for our democracy and our freedom.
His fight goes on as does ours!
