OPPOSITION WATCH: I’ll See You In Court Comrade!
You would think that supporting Comrade Corbyn would at least earn you a level of protection against the dreaded threat of deselection. However, as Cllr Aziz Choudhury and three of his colleagues found out, that is clearly not the case.
Cllr Choudhury was deselected from standing in Chadwell in next May’s local elections, despite gaining the most votes of any councillor in the ward, 2,352, in 2014. Alongside Cllr Choudhury, Cllr Barbara White and Loxford councillors Shakil Ahmad and Mohammad Ahmed have also been deselected.
Cllr Choudhury and his fellow exiles are not, however, taking this laying down. He told the Ilford Recorder:
“I’m going to sue the Labour Party for breach of contract and breach of its duty of care. I have instructed the biggest lawyers in the country to fight my case.”
Addressing the reasons for his unceremonious dumping, Cllr Choudhury talks very vaguely indeed about “unproven allegations” being used against him. This sounds potentially very shady indeed. Equally unclear is why his colleagues have been given the chop and it has to be said they are equally as unimpressed with the decision.
Cllr Barbara White, a former Redbridge Mayor and Goodmayes councillor for seven years, is also said to be considering taking legal action. She commented:
“I am a staunch member of the Labour Party and I have no desire to bring the Labour Party into disrepute, however I do think I have been treated very unfairly.
The mind truly boggles at the prospect of what really could be going on within the Redbridge Labour Party – whatever it is, it probably isn’t pretty and probably will mostly come out in a court case. I am pretty sure using courts to settle disputes is not something that will be in Comrade Corbyn’s Big Red Book of Rules And Regs and it seems that at least for these councillors, the notion of solidarity is a dead one.
