Tommy Robinson’s Twitter Verification Stripped After Tweet Quoting Muhammad
In what is becoming a more frequent occurrence in today’s social media, another outspoken right-wing public figure has been punished for speaking his mind.
This time, it was EDL Founder and critic of Islam Tommy Robinson who committed the dastardly crime of saying a fact. He sent the following tweet:
His crime? Quoting Muhammad. Nothing more.
He recieved an email from Twitter which said:
“We are writing to you to inform you that certain content on your Twitter account @TRobinsonNewEra has been flagged for possible violations of Twitter’s hateful conduct policy and/or other German laws.
“We are sending you this notification to allow you to evaluate the reported content”
This isn’t the first time that Twitter has punished a prominent commentator. In July 2016, Breitbart journalist Milo Yiannopoulos was infamously banned from Twitter for “inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others”. This has happened on countless other occasions to hundreds, if not thousands of right-wing individuals.
Tweeting about his apparent violation of Twitter’s rules, Mr Robinson said: “I was simply quoting Mohammed”.
Whatever one’s opinion on Tommy or his attacks on Islam, it is difficult to see this particular Tweet as anything more than simply quoting Muhammad, as he has said.
