‘FAKE NEWS’ FACEBOOK FAIL: Social Media Giant To Stop Flagging ‘Fake News’
In a dramatic and somewhat humiliating U-turn, Facebook has been forced to end its policy of ‘red flagging’ articles which it alleges are ‘fake news’ after one month. It now appears flagging the article may well make people MORE likely to believe it is true.
Facebook product manager Tessa Lyons explained in a blog-post:
“Academic research on correcting misinformation has shown that putting a strong image, like a red flag, next to an article may actually entrench deeply held beliefs – the opposite effect to what we intended.”
Instead of ‘red-flagging’ articles, Facebook will now show a variety of “related articles” next to stories instead.
Regular users of Facebook however frequently complain of political bias, for liberal and against conservative political positions and indeed it’s ‘fact-checking’ partners have all been implicated with a clear left-wing bias.
