ITALIAN PM: Brexit EUs ‘Biggest Crisis Ever’.
Italy’s Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni has used his end of year address to declare that while Brexit is the biggest crisis the EU he believes a ‘corner has been turned’.
“We can say that in the period after Brexit, which is the biggest EU crisis in 60 years of life, the meeting and the unanimous declaration of the 27 heads of state signed in Rome was a turning point
We didn’t solve the problems of the European Union but that moment marked a change in the trend.
In the following months, there have been successes and commitments on the pro-European plan that I hope 2018 can confirm.
Then there was the G7 of Taormina, which was an organisational success close to perfection.”
However, Mr Gentiloni is facing a rising tide of Italian Euroscepticism. Italy’s main eurosceptic party, the 5* Movement, is surging in the polls and the Eurosceptic Northern League is part of the centre-right bloc that is currently out in front of the polls at 36%. Italy will go to the polls for a General Election in March. Mr Gentiloni indeed looks like something of a modern-day King Canute, powerless to stem the eurosceptic tide that is sweeping his own nation.
UPDATE: Italy will go to the polls on March 4th.
