A New Years Message From UKIP Students Chairman Jake Painter
I would be lying if I said 2017 was an easy year for UKIP Students. We’ve had to deal with the backdrop of the internal and external problems the Party has been facing since the referendum.
However, we have persevered now have begun the process of rebuilding our strength and presence on student campuses. The latest examples are the establishment of our Kent and Exeter Societies, with more hopefully on the way. However, along with our gradual re-emergence on student campuses, it is simply not enough that we get societies on student campuses for the fun of it and that is why I am issuing a call to arms to all UKIP members currently studying at university and that is a call to arms to fight the NUS.
The UKIP Students Committee voted on a position to oppose the NUS and this position was ratified by the NEC. So, as soon as the New Year has started we will start an initiative of encouraging our members who are at university to push for their respective SU’s to hold referendums on their membership of the NUS. We have done this at the University of Essex where I set up the anti-NUS campaign and worked in a broad coalition with anti-NUS Kippers, Tories, Lib Dems and even some of those on the left and we eventually won our fight to leave. And we want to spread the revolution to other campuses.
So if you are a UKIP member who is at a university contact either myself at firstname.lastname@example.org or our UKIP Students secretary Will Donnelly at WillCpfcDonnelly@hotmail.co.uk And we will give help and guidance on how to get your SU’s to hold a referendum and how to win it. Along with this, it must be UKIP who must be the true voice of the right on student campuses. Establishment Tories must not be allowed to take that title. But to do this UKIP must take with it a radical message wherever it goes, it is the only way we will cut our own mild on student campuses. So if you are a member try your best to set up a society on your student campus to make it easier for us to spread our message. Even if you cannot do that, always challenge to boundaries of acceptable debate. If you want to facilitate a talk on Islamism, go for it. If you want to facilitate a talk on immigration, go for it. If you want to facilitate a talk on safe space policies go for it! We must also fight for absolute freedom of speech on campus, whether that is by facilitating debate or campaigning for sabbatical officers to be elected who support freedom of speech. No one else is going to do it for us so we must take the initiative and do it ourselves. With all that in mind, it is time for us to wind in the run-up to the new year. However, after we have all recovered from our respective new years’ celebrations to fight is on.
