Rees-Mogg: Free Movement MUST END
Jacob Rees-Mogg has spoken out over the EU demand that residency rights should continue after Brexit as Britain will still be bound by all EU laws during the transition phase.
The joint-statement agreed between the EU and UK last December specified date for EU citizens’ eligibility for securing UK residence would be March 29, 2019, the day Britain formally exits the EU, however, 27 EU Ambassadors have endorsed a note from the European Commission which states:
The specified date should be defined not as the date of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal, but as that of the end of the transitional period.
They also broadly supported the possibility of extending the transition period beyond two years if more time is needed to negotiate a new free trade agreement with Britain.
Mr Rees-Mogg is having none of it:
Free movement must end when we leave on 29th March 2019. Otherwise, we will not have taken back control in the way demanded by the referendum result.
Once again we are faced with a spineless government looking like it may well dilute the will of the people. 2018 has to be the year we make our presence felt and hold its feet to the fire.
