Merkel BACKS DOWN As Schulz Pushes EU Finance Minister
Martin Schulz, leader of the German Social Democratic Party is not a man who gives up. Despite seeing his dream of a United States Of Europe shredded in every poll going, he is still plugging away, and, thanks to Angela Merkel’s desperate bid to cling onto power, he is making progress.
In the initial coalition agreement with Angela Merkel’s CDU, Mr Schulz’s SPD has backed an “investment budget” for the euro, as well as turning the ESM bailout mechanism into a European Monetary Fund under parliamentary control.
Mr Schulz explained:
“The paper is a turnaround for European politics. There will be a European finance minister.”
Initially sceptical, Ms Merkel and the CDU now appear ready to crumble. Mr Schulz’s proposal is a big coup for embattled French President Emmanuel Macron, who favours the creation of an EU Finance Minister post. Ms Merkel is now highly likely to drag Germany into supporting his vision for the future of the EU, which also includes an EU army and shared defence budget.
So, Mr Schulz’s nightmare vision of a ‘United States Of Europe’, built against the express wishes of the European people and on the piled corpses of free nation states, seems to live on. Members of the German SPD will vote on the deal on January 21st.
