Clegg: EU Has A ‘Sneering Disregard For Patriotism’
Nick Clegg seems to be having a turn. We reported how he had expressed agreement with Jacob Rees-Mogg at the end of last month and now he has launched a stinging attack on Brussels for its attitude towards patriotism and the ‘politics of identity’. Mr Clegg, who has previously worked in Brussels, said that during his time there he saw a“barely-concealed, almost sneering disregard for the politics of identity and the politics of patriotism”.
Speaking during an event hosted by a Brussels think-tank The Lisbon Council, he said:
There was an assumption that patriotism was an old-fashioned vestige of an order that was dying away.
The genesis of European integration was to go above and beyond the trap of patriotic politics.
But it was a terrible misreading of what makes people tick.
He argued that the way forward for pro-Europeans was to combine patriotism with a pro-Europe stance to make an appeal to “Patriotic Europeanism”.
However, Mr Clegg seemed to acknowledge the forces behind Britain’s Brexit vote only partially and did little to address the democratic deficit that underpins the entire EU project. Quite how ‘Patriotic Europeanism’ would give people yearned for control over their own lives is not mentioned. So, what we have is repackaging of the same globalist ideal to crush freedom and the nation-state under its heel.
