WATCH: Farage SLAMS Foreign Aid As ‘Bribery Budget’
Nigel Farage said on his LBC show that the Foreign Aid budget should be renamed the ‘foreign bribery budget’. The comments came as Conservative politicians and the liberal media have rushed to condemn calls to cut the controversial budget in response to the Oxfam scandal. Willaim Hague described any moves to cut the budget as a ‘blunder’.
However, a new study argues that far from cutting migration from poorer countries, as proponents of the aid suggest, sending foreign aid might actually have the opposite effect. Researchers from the Center for Global Development, a Washington DC-based think tank, analyzed the few existing studies on the relationship between aid and migration and noted in the report that the strategy might be having the opposite effect:
Challenging received wisdom that aid deters migration, the report firstly says that “development aid disbursements do not generally follow ‘root causes’ rhetoric.” That is to say the way aid is distributed in countries with high emigration does not significantly differ from its distribution in other countries.
More politicians need to be like Nigel Farage and Jacob Rees-Mogg and challenge conventional wisdom on this issue.
