FISHING BETRAYAL: Labour “Living In A Dream World” Says Mike Hookem MEP
Labour MEPs have, for the second time in two months, connived with Brussels to vote down a motion from the EFDD Group aimed at protecting Britain’s fishing industry.
Mike Hookem MEP, a leading campaigner to protect fishing communities and to remove Britain from the hated Common Fisheries Policy pointed out that public support for the British fishing communities is huge:
Labour is living in a dream world if they think the great British public are going to sit back and allow Brussels to continue pillaging UK fishing grounds after Brexit. A recent study by the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) found that eight out of ten members of the public support the repatriation of UK fishing rights post-Brexit.Public support for the fishing industry is still growing! People who have never had anything to do with fishing now realise the extent to which the industry has been betrayed over the past 40-years and see Brexit as the golden opportunity it is.
It just goes to show, that despite their spin, the Labour Party are no fishermen’s friend; unless of course, those fishers are French, Dutch, Belgium, or Danish.
To keep the UK in the CFP post-Brexit is nothing more than a betrayal of core Labour principles, as well as a sell-out of struggling British coastal communities. But I guess in the case of fishers; Labour put their allegiance to the EU project above their supposed beliefs. The simple fact is, if Labour were true to its values, they would be offering fishing communities a future and ridding the UK of the hated CFP, rather than trying to undermine efforts for the return of the UK’s fishing industry.
