“Change Your Priorities!” YI Deputy Chair BLASTS Police Over Dankula Case
Reece Coombes, Deputy Chairman of Young Independence, has called for an “urgent” change in priorities following the conviction of YouTuber Count Dankula for a video in which his girlfriend’s pet pug dog performed Nazi salutes on command.
Count Dunkula, aka Mark Meechan, of Coatbridge in Lanarkshire, was convicted of ‘hate crime’ yesterday by Airdrie Sheriff Court. Mr Meechan told the court that he had made the video, in which the pug performs a Nazi salute when as he repeats the phrase “Sieg Heil” and “gas the Jews”, to “annoy” his girlfriend.
The video which was watched more than 3 million times led to Mr Meechan’s arrest in April 2016. Reacting to the verdict, he said it was a “very dark day for free speech”.
Reece Coombes, Deputy Chairman of Young Independence, UKIP’s youth wing said that that verdict illustrated that we have a country have totally the wrong priorities:
It is not the role of the state to determine which jokes are “grossly offensive” and lock up those who are deemed too offensive for society.
While our police are arresting owners of ‘Nazi Pugs’ and silencing humour, there are thousands of known terrorists walking our streets and thousands of cases of rape being ignored.
We urgently need to change our priorities in this country.
Mr Meechen will be sentenced on April 23rd.
