Dimbleby To Abbott: Why Are You Still In A Job??
The sacking of Owen Smith MP from the Labour front-bench for advocating a second referendum on the final deal negotiated with the EU prompted one BBC host to question why Diane Abbott is still in a job. In 2017, she wrote to her constituents in 2017 telling them they should have a say on the final Brexit deal.
Jonathan Dimbleby asked:
Shadow home secretary, why were you allowed to stay in your position when in November of last year you wrote a letter to your constituents saying ‘I will argue for the right of the electorate to vote on any deal that is agreed?
Ms Abbott insisted that the circumstances are different:
No, we have debated this in the Labour Party, we have debated it seriously because we take the referendum result seriously.
But we are not calling for a second referendum.
She insisted that Mr Smith could not sit on the front bench and advocate a position that was “not Labour Party policy” but could not elaborate on why her position was any different.
