Jonathan Pie: The Loony Lefty Who’s Not A Snowflake
On Friday night, political comedian Jonathan Pie performed at the Coulston Hall in Bristol and I had the pleasure of attending to hear his rants about… well… about everything!
Pie, who went viral on Facebook with a number of rants ranging in topic from Donald Trump & Theresa May to Political Correctness & Brexit, has taken to live comedy as a new way to bring laughter to the masses, while highlighting key underlying social and political issues.
Interestingly, Pie is one of very few lefties who I actually have a great deal of respect for. Despite being a socialist who despises Trump & Farage, he is a firm believer in their right to say the things they do and accepts the democratic votes that have taken place in the two nations. He is a genuine, decent person – which is very rare in politics today but even more so on the left.
When sussing out the audience, the support act beforehand (Andrew Doyle – who was equally brilliant) asked for any Labour supporters to cheer. Without exaggeration, I’d say around 70-80% of the room burst into a great eruption of whooping and applause. Being the Deputy Chairman of UKIP’s youth wing, this did not bode well for me – particularly not when he asked any UKIP supporters to cheer and there was my faint whoop alone from the corner!
The show on Friday began with a rather long splurt of abuse aimed directly at Theresa May. While some did seem a little overboard, that’s comedy for you! He took great delight in criticising her policies on the NHS, Brexit, tax, disabilities and much else – as well as her age and most of her cabinet.
However, he soon moved on to the bit we’d all been waiting for – political correctness.
The fact the word ‘F**k’ had already been used probably a few hundred times – along with a few hundred ‘sh*t’s, ‘tw*t’s and ‘c*ck’s – had given a fairly firm impression that this comedian wasn’t really your average politically correct, wishy-washy performer but somebody who was there to offend.
Pulling up the ‘Woke-A-Lator’ onto the big screen, Pie proceeded to explain what various modern liberal terms mean and how blatantly insane they each are, beginning with the word ‘woke’ itself. As he put it, ‘woke’ is how today’s youth say ‘right on’ – meaning how aware of modern terms and trends one might be.
Terms appearing on the ‘Woke-A-Lator’ included ‘Mansplaining’ and ‘Straight White Male Privilege’, both terms which Pie ripped into with tremendous delight. Mansplaining, Pie argued, was simply a term used as a victim card for women who are being spoken to patronisingly. If ever speaking to women patronisingly, Pie would be doing so because they had said something stupid, worthy of patronage – and no different to how he would speak to man in the same scenario. This, he claimed, was the case in virtually all instances of mansplaining. In fact, argued Pie, mansplaining is sexist by definition for it implies that women somehow require protection from patronising men – the opposite of the strong, powerful image of women which should be portrayed by feminists.
Overall, Jonathan Pie’s show was extremely entertaining but also very politically acute. Pie, while creating great humour and comedy, made very important and serious political points which will hopefully make an impact, albeit a small one, upon the attitude of lefties in Bristol.
