WATCH: Antifa Attack Meeting On Anti-Fascism
Liberate The Debate is a student society that exists on several University campuses explicitly to promote free speech. You may remember that at the end of last year they arranged for Sussex University to host Bill Etheridge MEP an event which was targeted by Antifa.
Since then, they have tried to maintain a “positive” relationship with the Students Union, they tried to organise another debate, this time between Sargon of Akkad and Xexizy about their interpretations of freedom of expression and Anti-Fascism.
However, things did not go according to plan:
On the day of the event, we were informed that the President of our Students’ Union had decided to pull out of chairing the debate. The alternatives provided, did not share our vision for the event. Our proposed Chair was deemed ‘unsafe’ by the Students’ Union, despite their experience as a moderator in controversial debates and the individual being well versed in Students’ Union policy. As a result, the Students’ Union decided to withdraw their support and cancel the event. The demand to have a suitable chair as ‘required’ by the event’s risk assessment was fabricated with a moment’s notice to solve the problems imposed on us, despite the fact that the Chair was purely suggestive, unenforceable, and all on the basis of tenuous logic. This is another evident no-platform by our Student’s Union and yet another attack on our freedom of expression. Nonetheless, an event with the same speakers took place privately. Because of our position, we were unable to have SIA trained security to protect participants in the event from agitators. This led to the assault of one of our senior committee members by a member of Antifa. The situation was de-escalated promptly with the continuation of the event without trouble.
Continuing, the statement says:
It is a shame that the decisions of the SU prevented us from making suitable arrangements to continue with the event safely. It is disheartening that the SU has not learnt from their previous mistakes. This is yet another clear example of no-platforming.
You can watch the assault below. Once again, Antifa has shown itself to be true enemies of free speech and democracy.
