LEWISHAM EAST: Labour Selection Chaos
The Labour campaign to retain Lewisham East has not got off to the best start. Labour have decided on an all-women and all ethnic minority shortlist, however, the local Labour Party is far from impressed both by the shortness of the election campaign and the selection process. The Guardian reports:
“Labour party members in… Lewisham East are protesting furiously that the byelection caused by the resignation of the MP Heidi Alexander is likely to be held in just five weeks’ time.
“They accuse the party’s national executive of rushing through the process to prevent the local party having a voice, with the candidate to be shortlisted and selected in just six days.
“The Lewisham East CLP chair, Ian McKenzie, emailed members calling on them to protest against the speed of the process.”
Meanwhile, it looks like the anointed Corbynista has an interesting CV. Claudia Webb is a former adviser to Ken Livingstone who defended him when he compared a Jewish journalist to a concentration camp guard. The previous choice by Comrade Corbyn, Phyll Opoku-Gymiah, pulled out after Guido Fawkes called her out for comparing Israel to the Nazis while Momentum backed candidate, Sakina Sheikh, last week shared a platform with the extremist imam Shakeel Begg.
