UKIP: Members To Decide Policy
Editors Note: The author is Chair Of UKIP Wirral and a former member of and candidate for the NEC.
When I spoke at the Extraordinary General Meeting I asserted that the NEC is committed to putting the power of the party where it belongs, in the hands of the members. It was with a heavy heart that the things you told us you wanted were put on the back burner while we struggled to keep the party viable. The last few weeks have been nothing short of a miracle, Gerard Batten has worked tirelessly to get us off our knees and build strong foundations, as have the members with their overwhelming financial support.
So what now? How do we overturn the disappointing results at the local elections and regain the trust of the electorate? Well, that’s up to you. At the last NEC meeting, Tony McIntyre and Sebastian Fairweather put forward a plan for a new mechanism to decide policy. If I remember correctly the vote was unanimous and yesterday Tony gave me permission to announce it.
The voice of members will be the loudest when it comes to deciding UKIP policy from now on. All members will be sent forms to put forward their priorities for policy. The issues that members decide are the most important will be pushed to the forefront of a new and hopefully vote winning manifesto that will hopefully be finalised at the conference. I love the idea of People’s Policies, I hope that you do too.
