CAPITULATION: Weak And Wobbly May Caves In To Remoaner Rebellion
Theresa May lives to fight another day..just. The Commons will back the government on the meaningful vote amendment. Mrs May began the day in confident mood according to early reports.
You can only speculate that this confidence soon evaporated as the government spectacularly caved-in offering the rebels and their leader Dominic Grieve sufficient assurances to enable them to support the government and stave off a cataclysmic defeat. The Parliamentary coup against the referendum is still very much on indeed given the inability of the government to impose its will on the House it is now simply happening.
So, Mrs May has succeeded in kicking the can further down the road. However, the last minute concession which will give the notoriously anti-Brexit Speaker of the House significant power to determine the parameters of the Parliamentary vote on the final deal means the respite is only temporary. Yet again, strong and stable Mrs May has proven to be very weak and wobbly and incapable of delivering the Brexit that the British people voted for.
