28% of Births In England Last Year Had Foreign Mother
There has been a large increase in the number of babies in England & Wales born to a foreign mother. The total for 2016 was a record 28% of all live births, and the figure has been increasing year on year since 1990.
The number of births in 2016 was around 700,000, meaning that just under 200,000 were to a foreign mother. The current figures released today do not give any information about the nationality of the other parent.
There was also another fall in births to those in the 20-24 year old age bracket, as well as a large increase in those giving birth aged over 40, to the highest level since 1938.
