BY-ELECTION WATCH: Good Night For Labour – Lib Dems Slump

There were nine principal authority by-elections last night (Thursday). With all but one of the results (from Knowsley MBC) now in it was a good night for Labour, holding the two seats they were defending and gaining two more, one each from the Conservatives (Leek East winner Darren Price shown above) and the Liberal Democrats. Labour’s vote increased in every seat it contested, with increases of over 20% achieved in three seats. For the Tories it was a mixed bag, with increases in vote share in six seats, but sharp declines in the other two. There is no doubt who the real losers on the night were, though. Vince Cable got a tough baptism on the night he was appointed the party’s new leader. Under Tim Farron the party had been doing pretty well in local by-elections, but last night that run of results came to an abrupt end with declines as high as 50% of the vote in some seats.

As reported yesterday UKIP only fielded one candidate in these contests. Bob Grahame stood in the St. Helier ward in Merton, coming last with 2.5% of the vote. They did at least field a candidate. Here are the declared results:-
