Salvini And Le Pen Pledge To Fight “Totalitarian” EU
One factor that will define and shape the 2019 European Elections is the growing pan-European cooperation between populist, anti-EU Parties. The news conference held recently by Matteo Salvini, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister and Marine Le Pen, leader of the French National Rally Party showed how that is cohering into a solid anti-EU bloc.
Salvini, who has had many firey clashes with Brussels Eurocrats, stated plainly “The enemies of Europe are those, who are entrenched in the Brussels bunker.” He went on to directly attack the EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and EU Economics Commissioner Pierre Moscovici, two Eurocrats that he has regularly targeted with verbal volleys as they try to impose a Budget settlement on Italy. He called them “the enemies of the European people and the happiness of the European people” and said that they have “brought precariousness and fear into Europe but still refuse to leave their thrones.”
Le Pen hailed a ‘historic moment’: “We are today at a historic moment. This is history with a capital ‘H’ that will be written in May 2019. It will be the emergence of a Europe of nations, a Europe of respect, a Europe of protection.”
Both said that they want to save Europe from itself and reclaim it for its people.
