EXCLUSIVE: Councillor John Whitby Is UKIPs Candidate For Expected Peterborough By-Election
UKIP’s National Executive Committee decided unanimously today to endorse Councillor John Whitby as UKIP’s candidate for the expected upcoming by-election in Peterborough.
Councillor Whitby is a member of Peterborough City Council having represented his Stanground Ward for nearly 4 years. In 2015, he beat the then leader of Peterborough City Council, Conservative Marco Cereste with 1,560 votes. Peterborough is a unitary authority combined with Cambridgeshire. It voted heavily to leave the EU in the 2016 Referendum and has relatively high levels of immigration.
In the 2017 General Election, Councillor Whitby stood for UKIP in North West Cambridgeshire which is a safe Conservative seat after UKIP decided not to contest the Peterborough seat to allow the then sitting Conservative MP and prominent Brexiteer Stewart Jackson a free run.
Cllr Whitby said:
The former Labour MP for the seat who is currently an independent due to her expulsion from the Labour Party, Fiona Onasanya is expected to be sentenced later this month following her conviction for perverting the course of justice. Depending of the severity of the sentence she could be automatically dismissed as an MP (12 months custodial, suspended or otherwise) or face a recall petition which 10% of electors in Peterborough must back for her to lose her seat (a custodial, suspended or otherwise, sentence of any length). Labour have indicated they would back the recall of Onasanya meaning it will have the support of all the main parties meaning it will most likely succeed and Onasanya will lose her seat upon it reaching the 10% required.
